I have a Hayes compatible 1200 baud modem I would like to try
with my 800xl. It has an rs-232 cable. Is there a way to make
up a cable so I can hook it up to the 800xl. If not approx.
how much is the cable?

I believe what you are looking for is the Rverter, a cable that runs from
the SIO port of your Atari to the RS232 port of your modem. Unfortunately,
my knowledge of the Rverter is very shallow; I'm not even sure whether it's
a product to be bought or a project to be built.
If you look at used products, you could look into the P:R:Connection,
which provides both printer (parallel) and serial (modem) ports. You'd
still also need a new cable, since Atari interfaces such as the 850 and the
P:R:Connection have 9-pin rs232 ports, unlike your 25-pin modem cable.
This "850 or P:R:Connection to Standard Modem Cable" is available
commercially from American T.V. for $19.95, or B&C ComputerVisions or
Best Electronics for $15.00. Best lists the P:R:Connection for $79.95,
but I doubt they still have them. (A used P:R: should cost half that.)
If anyone reading this has any information on building an Rverter (SIO to
modem) type cable, please post here.
