Armed with that9 } fact, Joe designed a grid that could be printed out from any word- processor. Joe included a file that is pr9 }operly set up for XLENT (ATOMGRID.XLT) and a generic "ASCII" file (ATOMGRID.ASC), and I've put the two of them on 9 }this disk. If you use a word-processor other than XLENT, Joe states that you must set your left margin at zero,9 } your right margin at 79, and use a page length of 61 lines. Joe uses his grid to diagram the game screen at each9} level, showing the barriers, outlines of the playfield, and the pre-play locations of the cursor and the atoms. He9} sent me a copy of his "cheat" for the first screen, complete with the directions of all moves. Although I 9}can't include that diagram here, I can tell you that Joe was able to do the first screen in twenty-seven moves. Joe sug9}gested that the OHAUG run a contest to see who can solve the game in the least number of moves at each level. But, th9}Gen, we should have many winners if our members use Joe's grid techinique, shouldn't we? Whether we run such a contest 9}or not, and whether you use Joe's grid or just try slugging out the game on your own, I think we should thank Joe9}2 for the work he put into this project.@ It was a very interesting educational demo. We alsoM}C looked at some programs from the previous newsletter disk.G At this meeting and the following meeting, Al dM}iscussed the Linux-6 version for the IBM system. I was unable to attend the July meeting because I was picking uM}p my 14-year old daughter from Vassar College, where she was taking summer courses. On July 17, we had a tM}errific barbecue, at my home, which was attended by all of the local members. The weather was beautiful and theM} food was plentiful. Everybody enjoyed themselves. On August 8, Al Sharkis's son TED got married to a lovely laM}Gdy named AMY. We wish them a happy marriage filled with many joyous events. At our August meeting, I showed a videoM} tape of the barbecue party that was held at my house. Al Sharkis demoed a disk that had fifteen different versions M} of DOS, taken from the website of ERHARD PUETZ, also known as "Atreju." Erhard is a most prolific AtarianM}, having produced many hardware projects, programs, and general expertise via ABBUC, the Atari8-L MailiM}ng List (Polish) and the comp.sys.atari.8bit newsgroup. On this disk, Atari DOS 2.5 was represented iM}n both an English and a German version. It was interesting to see how DOS could be converted into so many forms.M} Alan also demoed Atari Artworx which came from Holland. This program helps you design and route printed- circuitM} boards. Included programs are an editor, a utility that transfers the finished designs from an Atari runnM}ing Artworx to a PC running Artworks (a similar program) and vice-versa. A third program prints the completed M}circuit board, but the author, RUDOLPH CORNELISSEN, states that this utility is not finished. The package can be uM}sed to design up to a four-layer circuit board. The two-disk set has the three programs and a short read-me on M}side one of the first disk, full documentation on side two of the first disk, and a second full disk of assemblyM} source code. I demoed "the& ,famous0 Atari Planetarium, showing the eclipse of August 11 over London. YouM} can really see the moon covering the sun as time moves on in this program. Then I showed a printout of the M}eclipse. This Atari program is phenomenal. We tested the library's telephone line by connecting to the NassauM}\ Net using Ice-T. We went on to CURT VENDEL's site. The meeting was great.i vBYE FOR NOW,} M} JACK GEDALIUS# 0o=o=o=o=o=}L0 o=o=o=o=o=* URL List So much has been happening in the 8- bit world! There are developmQ}Gents galore, and websites have been springing up to tout them. I last published a list of URLs several yeR}ars back, and it's now time to update it. This list is long, and carries some annotation but not full descriptioR}ns -- we'd be reading the list forever if I did that! Most of the sites can be viewed in text form if you can connectR} that way with your 8-bit, but SO FAR, for best results, you should use a PC and the latest version you can get R} of either Netscape or Internet Explorer. Many of these sites are connected through the Atari 8-bit Webring. The hR}ome page of that Webring is on the list. A Webring is a way of linking pages of similar interest so that they can R}be found easily. Since our 8-bits can't underline, you will have to copy these URLs to a piece of paper or print R} out the article and then type them in from the PC's browser. Remember that "%7E" in 8-bit typing becomes R}a "tilde" on the PC and that "%3a" becomes a "colon" on the PC. To demonstrate how it works, he has set upV} the second telnet-able Atari BBS. This one runs the freeware BBS Express (URL is also on that URL List.) He wants to know if there will be an accompanying reduction in dues. Theb} annual dues will be $20 starting in the year 2000 instead of $24 as it was in the previous years. JOE HICSWA's seb}cond letter informed that he was frustrated by the game, Atomit on the back of the Newsletter disk. He found a wb}Gay to make the game easier to play.JOE sent two files to ALAN which are the result of his research.
