I'd like here to point oubN}t a sample of the world of wonders a PC can make possible for a diehard 8bit fan. The greatest thing that ever happenbO}ed to my good Ol 8bit Atari (a stock 130XE) was the PC. Thanks to the sio2pc, my 130XE was given tremendous new power. bP}My 8bit and PC can talk to one another. Each enhanced the other. Thanks to emulation, I can run useful, practical and bbQ}eautifully uncomplicated 8bit applications. I can run them at triple the speed of the native platform and with magnitudesbR} more storage. There are 8bit programs that I use every day on the PC. Thanks to batch files and a keystroke recorder, IbS} can type a few characters, press [return] and I'm instantly running a familiar 8 bit program on the PC. The greatest bT}asset provided by PCs, I feel, is their ability to use fast web browsers and harvest the treasures available on the interbU}net of interest to 8bit Atarians. I will scratch the surface of what is available in this article. INFO-ATARI8. ThibV}s is an email "List." Atarians worldwide can communicate with each other, sharing questions, answers, ideas, experiencesbW}, you name it. Lots of hardware tinkerers tend to hang out here. Here I found directions to many of the other places I'lbX}l subsequently tell you about. To join, send an email to LISTSERV@VM.MARIST.EDU with the command SUBSCRIBE INFO-ATARI8. bY} Once subscribed, you can expect to receive 2-20 emails daily from this list. You will be sent initially an introductionbZ}/information message detailing a repertoire of commands at your disposal, for instance, how to access the list's database.b[} One of the first web sites I heard about in INFO-ATARI8 was http://www.atarimagazines.com. Here can be found the enb\}tire Antic magazine archive. It is equipped with a search engine. All the 8bit Antic programs ever published are downlb]}oadable here. Note: the download function is only compatible with the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Netscape is not compb^}atible with downloads here. Entire disks can be downloaded in .DCM format, as well as individual programs. I downloaded b_}one of those programs using my wife's Pentium and attached it to an email and sent it to the address I use with my old 48b`}6 Windows 3.1 system. Using sio2pc I copied the Antic file to an .ATR disk image and hand no problems RUNing it. Oneba} of those everyday programs I run on my PC is JOBJAR.BAS, which was published in the January 1990 Antic. On this site canbb} also be found a complete index of Antic articles. If you like stepping back into the times of the 8bit Atari's heyday, bc}these articles can be your doorway. Another "list" on the web is comp.sys.atari.8bit. You don't have to clutter your bd}email program with messsages though to participate. Messages are listed by subject, sender, and date and can be read by be}clicking on them. If a message of interest that you click on is part of a larger thread of messages related by topic, thabf}t thread will be displayed schematically. The easiest most convenient way to access comp.sys.atari.8bit is by web brobg}wser, going through http://www.deja.com/usenet Once there, enter in the search field comp.sys.atari.8bit. You can then bbh}ookmark this site and access the latest postings as well as archives. You don't have to be a subscriber to the newsgrobi}up to reply directly to the sender of posted messages, but you must be a subscriber to post messages there. It is easy tbj}o subscribe, if you care to, right there. There is a powerful search engine at this site that will retrieve any message bk}containing the entered string. I entered "Star Gemini 10X" (without the quotes) and voila, was referred to a message posbl}ted just the previous day by OHAUG'S own programming guru, Thomas J. Andrews, who mentioned a favorite printer of mine. bm}Long-time hard- working OHAUG newsletter editor Alan Sharkis still contributes regularly here. ...Wow! minutes ago bn}I read a 6 month old message on this site disclosing that Kevin Savetz, curator of the Antic magazine archives (mentionedbo} above), has offered to archive the OHAUG library.. comp.sys.atari.8bit and the INFO-ATARI8 newsgroups are both excebp}llent ways to stay in touch with an active adventurous worldwide community of Atari 8bit enthusiasts. A broad range ofbq} 8bit archives can be found at a University of Michigan website: http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/ systems/atari/umich.edu/8bitbr}. The archives are organized into categories such as Applications, Disk Utilities, Education, Languages, etc. There arebs} some Zmag and Analog programs that can be downloaded from the Magazines category. I downloaded a new emulator from thisbt} site, titled XLIT016.ZIP, in the emulators category, but haven't as yet tested it. As with the Antic magazine mentionebu}d above, successful downloads require use of the Microsoft Internet Explorer. The Netscape browser is not compatible witbv}h downloads here. If you are interested in having your 8bit Atari and PC working together, the means to do this are avbw}ailable at http://www.nacs.net/~classics/ index/.html, Steve Tucker's APE (Atari Peripheral Emululator) home page. The cabx}ble required to physically connect PCs and 8bit Ataris is one of numerous items that can be ordered here. APE software by}is compatible with standard sio2pc cables. Try-before-you-buy free unregistered versions of software is available for imbz}mediate download, as well as the user's manuals. Software Versions are available for platforms ranging from 486 PCs runnb{}ing Windows 3.1 to Pentiums running W95/NT. One of the items available here that I downloaded was the APE 1.17 Prosystb|}em Copy Protection Imaging and Emulation System. With it, I hope to be able to run on the PC one of my favorite 8bit sprb}}eadsheets, SynCalc. This APE website is a delight for the eyes and a virtual treasure chest. Steve Tucker provides lib~}nks to other sites as well, such as to the online Pool disk, the historical archive of the Cleveland Free-net Atari SIG,b} and Jellystone Park, a British underground Atari 8bit archive, (for the curious). Another valuable resource on the web}b for 8bit Atarians is eBay, at www.ebay.com. eBay can be thought of as a world size flea market, or as we call them wherb}e I live, "swap-meets." You enter what you're looking for and name the highest price you are willing to pay. I wanted ab} Star Gemini 10X printer. One was available at a minimum bid of $1. I entered $10 as my maximum but eneded up winning thb}e auction for only a dollar. That printer is now an on-line system component. Entry of "Atari" in the eBay search boxb} returned a staggering 4,022 items. Narrowing it down to "Atari computer" returned 72 items. Among them was an 800XL systb}em going for $12. There were 8 Atari disk drives being offered, ranging from a "Rare" "New" 1050 going for $102.51, to ab}nother 1050 offered along with an 800 computer for $4.99. It is possible to send disk images by email attachment. It b}is possible to send the entire OHAUG newsletter electronically by that means. I've done it. I created a disk image of ab} newsletter, attached it to an email and sent it to my email account on my wife's pentium. The sending process took 3 minb}. with a slow 486 and 56K modem. How long does it take to copy a master newsletter disk, tape it inside a mailer, address,b} stamp and mail one for each OHAUG member? How much does it cost for the disks? At www.eGroups.com we could createb} our own electronic "club." Free. OHAUG membership is diverse and already significantly non-local. Even for locals thereb} is weather and traffic and schedules to contend with for a meeting. Our own eGroup is one way to have a meeting, each fb}rom the comfort of their home, any day, at their time of choice. I hope I have succeeded here in presenting you wib}th viable new possibilities.
