I play games on my PC. I even polish shoes -- anything (}to take me away from writing this column. Do I hate to write it? Just the opposite is true. I've been doing i(}t so long, and loving it so long, that knowing that this is the last one makes it difficult for me to write it. But, (}Pwrite it I must, so here goes: PACESetter for September 1999 -- ThereU fare interestingj things happening a(}t the PACE meetings. They have successfully demonstrated 8-bit emulation on a PC connected to an Atari 150 drive, (}G but didn't state which program they used. (My guess, since the PC was connected to an Atari drive, was that it (} was some version of PC Xformer -- Ed.) The members were impressed by the sheer capacity of the PC for Atari fil(}es and wish to learn how emulators work so that they, too, can use a similar setup. Later in this issue, there was,(} indeed, a review of PC Xformer 98, so I guess my hunch is confirmed. A column labeled, "Carolyn's Corner," (CAROLYN HO(}GLIN) presented by the Mid-Florida Atari Computer Club, addresses several tricks for using AtariWriter Plus. (}The JACG Newsletter for September 1999 -- President JOSEPH E. HICSWA contributes most of the material to this new(}sletter once again. He tells why learning an Atari utility or application (he's learning SWIFT spreadsheet now)(}' is like playing a computer game.+ He shares his experiences cleaning a keyboard. He reviews newsletters (i(}ncluding our own,) prints club correspondence and his answers, and submits an article, reprinted here from the July 12,(} 1999 issue of the Herald and News about more sophisticated methods of hacking into computers from remote locations. ((}Our Ataris are not subject to such evil acts -- Ed.) Editor TOM LASKOWSKI reviews Shattered Alliance, a war s(}imulation. One more news article, on the back page, discusses the fact that search engines cannot keep pace with th(}e rapid expansion of the Web. XIO3 for September/November 1999 -- This is the first I've noticed that this newslet(}ter has become a quarterly. I'm not surprised, and I believe other club newsletters will follow. In fact, the(} Atari News and Rumours column, by Editor ROWLAND GRANT, gives details about the demise of two Atari magazines at t(}he same time that it tells of the birth of a new one. It also tells of the loss of the Cleveland FreeNet, which was,(} in addition to everything else it did, a great repository of Atari 8- bit discussion. In his 8-Bit Affairs column,(} Rowland announces the release of the beta version of STEPHEN TUCKER's APE '98. Stephen is also willing to put )}Gthe entire text of the Atari SIGS of the now-defunct Cleveland FreeNet on his Linux-based server. CURT VENDEL h)}as aquired the tech data and schematics for ANTIC, POKEY and GTIA from Hasbro and will make them available at his )} Atari Historical Society Web Site (see last issue for the URL.) PAUL NURIMEN has developed software for the ST (800XL )}Deejay) so that the ST can use an SIO2PC cable just like the PC. TOM HUNT has developed ProBASIC, a compiled)} BASIC for use with the popular BBS Express PRO program. JACG Newsletter for October 1999 -- President JOSEPH E.)} HICSWA has a couple of suggestions for Atari user groups to attract potential members. One is to advertise the cl)}ub's next meeting date and place in a local newspaper. Joe states that many papers would consider this kind o)}f announcement community news, and will print it gratis. Joe also suggests that an Atari user group, after getti)}ng permission from its meeting place, can sponsor a blood drive, or allow a car dealer to exhibit new cars in the) } parking lot of the meeting place and announce that this will happen on a meeting date, and that the user grou) }Pp will also be showing off its equipment on that date in that place.T Joe also reprinted a letter he sen) }t to the editor of The New York Times, responding to an article in July that mentioned many older computers, but) }Ǜ not Atari. Joe stated that he was not only president of the JACG, but also a member of PACE and the Ol' Hacker) }s and that the Times could contact people at these two user groups for more information. Joe also reviews )}a Atomit, and Editor TOM LASKOWSKI reviews Temple of Apshai. An article released on the web:i and written by former Atari luminary DONALD A. THOMAS, Jr., explains the virtues and pitfalls of DIVX while co)}mparing it to DVD. It's important reading, even though the negative side of DIVX seems to have put an end to that me)}dium. Finally, there's a great cartoon on page 8. SLCC Journal for October 1999 -- Although there is no accom)}Gpanying article, there is a screen shot of the home page of the BRiTiSH Underground Atari 8-bit site (see)} last issue for URL) showing a rainbow fuji, the Intel Outside symbol and a few of the links. PACESetter f)}or October 1999 -- There is an important discussion (reprinted from DE RE ATARI via the LVAUG) of the special chips (PI)}A, ANTIC, POKEY, FREDDY and GTIA) inside an Atari 8- bit, how they interface with the 6502, RAM and the OS. There )}is also a review of Student Organizer for the PC, another Carolyn's Corner (CAROLYN HOGLIN of the Mid-Florida Atari Club))}Ǜ column describing the use of mail merge within AtariWriter Plus, a column explaning what "Cookies" are, and a )}humorous column of tombstone inscriptions. I guess I ended this column in what some might call appropriate way --)} the mention of tombstone enscriptions. Well, too bad for the cynics out there. I believe that the column)} will continue in one form or another. Sorry I won't be writing it. It has given me lots of information a)}nd pleasure over the past several years, and I hope it has served to convey that information and pleasure to you. *+*)}%+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*}(%+TTFLSVC2BMSEASTMTAABSTARECHKSUCHHLDLINOFSITMVBNNNNNNNNNNN1ZURCWHF-}xTWDSCCEITIDVBCVSZINXCODGGGKEPWTCSTKKGHEDRSBSDNDCLGHQXFKKXY@|-}Dss sss[wwbb4EEy AeHI PQ X[ @`a hipyB'}- } BCpAp@!#&@$+4Br;<CDKLST[\cdklst{ -!}!"#$&'%./&57'=?(FG)NO*VW+^_,eg-mo.vw/}-"}0 123 "4(*50268:@7@B@8HJ9PR@:XZ@;`bx?-#}@@ ABC$%D,-E45F<=GDEHLMITUJ\]KdeLlmMtuN|O-$}CPQR S'(T/0U78V?@WGHXNPYVXZ_`[gh\op]wx^}-%}%_ `ab"#c*+d23e:;fBCgJKhSBY CLAYTON WALNUMǬ-&}6-@#6-@H!)'6-@'-336-9A?6-@EMK6-@QYW6-@]ec6-@iqo6-@u{6-@-'} 6-@6-@$6-@ (06-@4H;,;, BLp %5( AT THE CAMP6-@Bt+6-@D-(}O5 A !( IN A TENT6-!
